Forest bathing, or shinrin-yoku as it's known in Japan, is the practice of immersing yourself in the sights, sounds, and smells of the forest. This mindful experience has been scientifically proven to help to reduce stress, improve mood, and promote overall well-being. Whether you’re new to forest bathing or looking to deepen your practice, here are my top ten tips to make the most of your time in nature.

  1. Choose the Right Location

Why It Matters: The environment you choose for forest bathing should be a place where you feel safe, comfortable, and can easily connect with nature. It doesn’t have to be a dense forest - a local park, nature reserve, or even a quiet wooded area will work. Even your back yard will work if there are trees are plant life.

Tip: Look for a place with minimal human-made noise and plenty of natural beauty. The location should be accessible, but remote enough to allow you to fully disconnect from urban life. If possible, explore the area beforehand to find a spot that resonates with you.

  1. Leave Technology Behind

Why It Matters: Forest bathing is about disconnecting from the distractions of modern life and immersing yourself fully in nature. Phones, cameras, and other devices can disrupt this experience.

Tip: Before you enter the forest, turn off your phone or leave it behind. If you must bring it for safety reasons, keep it on silent and use it only in emergencies. The goal is to be present in the moment, without any distractions.

  1. Move Slowly and Mindfully

Why It Matters: Unlike a hike or walk, forest bathing is not about covering distance or getting exercise. It’s about slowing down, moving at a gentle pace, and allowing yourself to fully engage with your surroundings.

Tip: As you begin your forest bathing session, walk slowly, paying attention to each step. Notice the feeling of the ground beneath your feet and the movement of your body. There’s no need to rush - let your body set the pace.

  1. Engage All Your Senses

Why It Matters: Forest bathing is a multisensory experience. By engaging all your senses, you can fully immerse yourself in the natural environment, which helps to calm the mind and body.

Tip: As you walk, pause frequently to engage your senses. Listen to the sound of leaves rustling, birds singing, or water flowing. Feel the texture of tree bark, moss, or leaves. Inhale deeply to take in the forest’s natural scents. If safe, even taste the freshness of the air or edible plants. I like to sit with my eyes closed for a while to allow the sounds and smells of the forest to increase as they seemingly try to compensate for the temporary visual loss. Let your senses guide you through the experience.

  1. Find a Quiet Spot to Sit

Why It Matters: Sitting quietly in one place allows you to deepen your connection with the forest and become more attuned to its subtle rhythms and sounds.

Tip: After walking for a while, find a comfortable spot to sit - on a rock, a log, or directly on the ground. Close your eyes or soften your gaze, and simply listen to the sounds around you. Let yourself be still and absorb the tranquility of the forest.

  1. Practice Deep Breathing

Why It Matters: Deep breathing helps to calm the nervous system and enhance your connection with the forest. The air in a forest is rich with oxygen and phytoncides (natural oils emitted by trees), which can help reduce stress and boost immunity.

Tip: Take slow, deep breaths, inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth. Focus on the sensation of the cool, fresh air entering your lungs. Visualize the breath cleansing your body and mind, filling you with a sense of peace and connection.

  1. Observe Without Judgment

Why It Matters: Forest bathing is about experiencing nature as it is, without imposing expectations or judgments. This non-judgmental observation helps to cultivate mindfulness and presence.

Tip: As you walk or sit, observe the forest around you without labeling or analyzing. Notice the colors, shapes, and movements without forming opinions or judgments. Allow yourself to simply be in the moment, experiencing the forest as it is. If it initially helps you to quieten the mind, try gently humming to yourself since this makes mind chatter impossible.

  1. Stay as Long as You Need

Why It Matters: There’s no set time limit for forest bathing. The goal is to relax and rejuvenate, so stay as long as you feel comfortable and connected.

Tip: Plan to spend at least 30 minutes to an hour in the forest, but listen to your body. If you feel relaxed and want to stay longer, do so. If you feel ready to leave earlier, that’s okay too. The key is to honor your own rhythm and needs.

  1. Reflect on Your Experience

Why It Matters: Reflecting on your forest bathing experience helps to deepen its benefits and integrate the calm and clarity you’ve gained into your daily life. In my experience, the more I reflect on the experience, the more I savor it, the more I feel gratitude for it, and the more I want to come back and do it again.

Tip: After your session, take a few moments to reflect on how you feel. You might want to journal about your experience, noting any thoughts, feelings, or insights that arose. This reflection can help you carry the peace of the forest with you as you return to your daily routine.

  1. Incorporate Forest Bathing into Your Routine

Why It Matters: Regularly practicing forest bathing can have lasting benefits for your mental and physical well-being. It’s a simple, yet powerful way to maintain balance and reduce stress.

Tip: Try to make forest bathing a regular part of your routine, whether it’s once a week or once a month. The more you immerse yourself in nature, the more attuned you’ll become to its calming effects.
