Tips for Hiking in the Malepère Massif
- Maps and Guides: If you're not with an experienced guide, it’s recommended to carry a detailed map of the trails. The local tourist offices will provide maps and additional information. Or you can use a reliable GPS device - I prefer gaiagps which is free and ignrando which costs me about €20 per year.
- Weather: Check the weather forecast before setting out. The region can experience sudden weather changes because of the many micro climates. Wind in the Aude can get up to 120 kilometers an hour and more.
- Supplies: Carry sufficient water, snacks, and a first aid kit. Most trails do not have easy access to water sources.
- Footwear: Wear sturdy, comfortable hiking boots or shoes with good ankle support, as some trails can be rocky and uneven.
- Respect Nature: Stick to marked trails, avoid disturbing wildlife, and take your trash with you to keep the area pristine.
The Malepère region offers a variety of trails suitable for all levels of hikers, making it a great destination for experiencing the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Aude.
Whether you are looking for self-guided or guided walking holidays, you'll be sure to find it all in this glorious part of France.
